Reducing carbon footprint in mining by bulk ore sorting

Sustainability and environmental consideration stand at the core of IMA’s philosophy. Everything we do is to help mines become more efficient and environmentally sustainable.

The IMA Bulk Ore Sorting System (BOSS) has been designed with the same philosophy in mind.

The IMA BOSS includes an IMA FCA sensor on mobile sorting conveyor with Flop Gate to separate waste rock from the ore.

In Bulk Ore Sorting the IMA BOSS is removing waste rock from mineral concentrator feed material and replacing it from ore recovered by sorting from waste rock. This is done before the material enters the energy intensive grinding and process which consumes up to 50% of the energy used in mining. Replacing waste with ore in concentrator reduces energy consumption and related CO2 emissions for per ton metal in the ore and concentrate. Moreover, the recovery ore from waste rock by sorting is done without increasing mining tonnage and related energy consumption. This means more metal per tons in mining and up to 20% less energy consumption and CO2 emissions in mining and processing. At the same time the BOS reduces the amount of mine tailings per ton of metal produced.

What is IMA Engineering?

IMA Engineering has used on-line sensors for analyzing ore and waste rock in mining for more than 25 years. Today IMA on-line sensors are used in various stages of the mining process including on-line analysis of drill cores, drill chips, ore and waste in loader bucket, ROM ore analysis on belt conveyor belt and in bulk ore sorting and in slurry analysis in concentrators.
